• First thing to do with it is to take a minute to tidy the wick up a bit - just trim it to about 5 mm before you light it up for the first time
• After that, just plonk it on a flat table somewhere - make sure its not going to get knocked over & it's sitting on something that won't catch fire. 
• Now, the first time you light it, let the wax melt evenly - don't rush it.
• Burn the candle for no more than 3 - 4 hours at a time - no need to have it going all through the night
• And as a general rule of thumb - keep it out of the way of kids, pets, and any old flammable materials for your own peace of mind. 
• Never, ever leave a burning candle just sitting there, waiting for something to go wrong.
